Pathways after School

Your VET journey doesn't end when you finish secondary school.

The skills, experience and qualifications gained through VET can help you take the next step towards further study, an apprenticeship or traineeship, university, employment or a career you are passionate about.

VET also gives you the opportunity to experience an industry while you're still at school, helping you make more informed decisions about what you want to do next.

Where Can VET Take You?

Combine paid employment with practical training while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships are available across many industries, including construction, electrical, automotive, engineering and horticulture.

Apprenticeship

Add a Learn on the job while completing a qualification. Traineeships can provide pathways into areas such as business, community services, early childhood education, hospitality and other industries.

Traineeship

Your future pathway might include:

TAFE & Further VET Study

Your school-based VET course may be the beginning of further vocational study. Students can progress to Certificate III or IV qualifications, diplomas and advanced diplomas, depending on their chosen industry.

VET and university are not necessarily separate pathways. Some students continue from VET into higher education, using the practical skills and industry knowledge they have already developed to support their future studies.

University

Employment

The practical skills, workplace experience and transferable skills developed through VET can help prepare students to enter the workforce with greater confidence and an understanding of employer expectations.

Discover what you're passionate about.

You don't need to have your entire future planned while you're at school.
One of the benefits of VET is the opportunity to try an industry, develop practical skills and discover what interests you.

You might confirm that a career you've always considered is right for you—or discover an entirely different pathway you hadn't thought about before.

Skills that go with you.

Whatever pathway you choose, VET can help you develop skills that are valuable across many workplaces and careers, including

  • communication

  • teamwork

  • problem solving

  • initiative

  • reliability

  • adaptability

  • organisation.

These future-ready skills can support you throughout further study, employment and your career.

There is more than one pathway.

Your pathway doesn't have to look like everyone else's.

VET can be a starting point, a stepping stone or a direct pathway into your chosen industry. What matters is finding the pathway that's right for you.
