VET Course Expectations & Important Information
Before starting a VET course, students and families should understand the expectations around attendance, assessment, behaviour, participation and workplace learning.
These requirements help students successfully complete their course and prepare for industry.
Expectations of VET Students
Student Code of Conduct
All students enrolling in a VET program through the Sunbury Macedon Ranges VET Cluster are required to complete the VET Student Code of Conduct as part of their enrolment.
The Code outlines expectations for behaviour, participation and engagement. Students and families should read and understand these requirements before commencing their course.
Your Home School VET Coordinator can provide further information.
Attendance & Absences
Regular attendance is essential. Students are expected to:
-
attend all scheduled VET classes
-
arrive on time and ready to learn
-
maintain attendance that supports successful completion of course requirements
-
advise their Home School/VET Coordinator of planned absences as early as possible
-
notify their Home School/VET Coordinator if they are unable to attend on the day.

An attendance rate of at least 80% is recommended to support successful completion of Units of Competency.
Attendance alone does not guarantee competency or completion of the qualification.
If a student is absent on a scheduled assessment day, they should:
-
Notify their Home School VET Coordinator and VET Trainer before class begins.
-
Provide appropriate documentation, such as a parent/carer note or medical certificate where required.
-
Discuss arrangements for the assessment with their VET Coordinator and Trainer.
Failure to follow the required process may mean an assessment cannot be rescheduled.
Absence on an Assessment Day
Some VET courses include or require Structured Workplace Learning (SWL). Where applicable, students are expected to participate in workplace learning and meet the attendance, behaviour, safety and workplace requirements of the host employer.
Your VET Coordinator will advise you of any SWL requirements for your course.
VET Transport
Students and their families are primarily responsible for organising their own transport to and from the VET delivery venue.
If barriers are identified for students to access their VET course, students should speak with their Home School VET Coordinator to determine if VET Transport funding facilitated by the Local Learning Employment Network’s (LLEN’s), may be able to assist the student to attend their VET course each week.

Course Work & Assessment
Students are expected to:
-
complete all learning and assessment tasks by the required due dates
-
demonstrate competency in each Unit of Competency (UoC)
-
complete prerequisite units before progressing where required
-
participate fully in practical and theory-based learning activities.
Students will receive credit or a Statement of Attainment for Units of Competency they successfully complete.
The Home School VET Coordinator will be advised if a student is not meeting course participation or assessment requirements.
Reports & Results
Students undertaking a VET program will receive written progress reports from their Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Reports are provided to the student’s Home School for distribution to students and families.
At the completion of the program, the RTO will issue the relevant certificate or Statement of Attainment for successfully completed Units of Competency.
Program Completion & Partial Completion
Some VET programs can be completed within two years, while others require additional study to achieve the full qualification.
Where the full certificate cannot be completed within the VETDSS program, the course will be identified as a partial completion. Students will receive recognition for the Units of Competency they successfully complete.
Check the course duration and course information before applying to see whether a program offers full or partial completion.
Student Expectations
Students undertaking VET through the SMRVC are expected to:
-
attend regularly and arrive on time
-
wear the required uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
-
bring all required equipment, including a fully charged laptop where required
-
complete assessments and learning tasks by the due dates
-
follow all safety requirements and trainer instructions
-
comply with Host School/RTO policies, including mobile phone and device requirements
-
behave respectfully and contribute to a safe and inclusive learning environment
-
communicate promptly with their VET Trainer and Home School VET Coordinator about absences, difficulties or concerns.

Structured Workplace Learning
Some VET courses include or require Structured Workplace Learning (SWL). Where applicable, students are expected to participate in workplace learning and meet the attendance, behaviour, safety and workplace requirements of the host employer.
Your VET Coordinator will advise you of any SWL requirements for your course.
Course Applications & Availability
Priority Placement
Where demand for a VET course exceeds available places, the SMRVC uses a priority placement process to support fair allocation of places, taking into consideration students’ study pathways and course requirements.
Waitlists
While the SMRVC aims to provide students with access to their preferred VET course, places cannot always be guaranteed.
If a course is oversubscribed, students may be offered the opportunity to:
-
select an alternative VET course, or
-
be placed on a waitlist for their preferred course.
Minimum Enrolment Numbers
VET courses require minimum student numbers to proceed. If a course does not receive sufficient enrolments, it may be withdrawn.
Students affected will be supported by their Home School VET Coordinator to consider an alternative VET course.
Meeting Course Requirements
Students who do not meet attendance, behaviour, safety, assessment or participation requirements may be at risk of not completing Units of Competency or being withdrawn from the VET program.
If you are experiencing difficulties, speak with your VET Trainer or Home School VET Coordinator as early as possible so support can be provided.
