Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)

Take Your VET  Learning into the Workplace

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is compulsory for many VET courses, and gives students the opportunity to develop and practice skills in a real workplace related to their VET program.

SWL provides valuable exposure to industry, workplace expectations and different occupations while helping students connect what they learn through VET with how those skills are used at work.

Why Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)         is important

Students can:

  • gain practical workplace experience

  • develop confidence and employability skills

  • learn from experienced industry professionals

  • understand workplace expectations

  • explore whether an industry or occupation is right for them

  • build industry contacts

  • strengthen future apprenticeship, traineeship and employment opportunities

  • Students should speak with their Home School VET Coordinator or careers team about the SWL requirements related to their chosen course and placement opportunities.

  • Students will be encouraged to approach potential host employers for their SWL placement

  • Visit the Department of Education's School to Work portal.

The Portal is a statewide resource coordinated by LLENs across the state who

collaborate with local employers to host students for SWL and work

experience. Prospective SWL vacancies are listed on the portal.
