Not everything you hear about VET is true.
Let's bust some common myths and discover the facts about vocational education, career pathways and the opportunities VET can provide.
❌ Myth: VET is only for students who don’t want to go to university
✅ Fact: Many VET courses support multiple pathways
For example: Engineering, Health Services, Business, IT, and Early
Childhood Education can lead to TAFE, university,
apprenticeships, or employment, with some programs
contributing to a student’s ATAR.


❌ Myth: VET isn’t a “real” qualification
✅ Fact: VET courses lead to nationally recognised qualification For example: Certificate II in Engineering Studies, Hospitality,
Apparel Fashion and Textiles, or Community Services
are recognised by employers and training providers across Australia.
❌ Myth: VET limits your future options
✅ Fact: VET courses often expand career choices
For example: Students in VET courses such as Building & Construction, Automotive,
Electrotechnology, Early Childhood, Beauty or Allied Health may
continue into apprenticeships, traineeships, or further study while
gaining industry experience during school.


❌ Myth: VET is all work and no learning
✅ Fact: VET courses combine theory and hands-on
learning
For example: Hospitality students learn food safety and customer service, IT students develop digital
and problem-solving skills, and Early Childhood
students learn child development alongside practical tasks.
❌ Myth: VET is easier than other subjects
✅ Fact: VET courses have real workplace expectations
For example: Students enrolled in all VET courses must meet
attendance, safety, assessment, and behaviour
standards — just like in real jobs.
